Colt McCoy To Start Rest Of 2010

Eric Mangini is usually unnecessarily coy about his starting quarterback.  Not anymore.  Maybe it has something to do with the fact that only one of the three quarterbacks in the Browns stable has played well enough to deserve a starting spot.

Mangini announced Thursday that Colt McCoy will be his starting quarterback on Sunday in Cincinnati, and continued by saying McCoy will be the man when the Browns return home for the final two games against Baltimore and Pittsburgh.  McCoy has been on the shelf for 3 weeks with a high-ankle sprain.

The thought right now is that longtime backup Seneca Wallace will be the #2 quarterback with Jake Delhomme selling hot dogs in the stands.  OK, maybe not, but Delhomme will likely not see the field again as a Cleveland Brown.

Colt McCoy reminds me of Tom Brady too

This morning while I was shaking off the effects of my first migraine headache, I read an article over on Waiting for Next Year talking about Colt McCoy and his similarities to Tom Brady.

I have to say, I've heard him compared to Drew Brees (a lot). I've heard Colt compared to Peyton Manning in the ball that he throws, as well as Troy Aikman. But to me, I've been most reminded of Tom Brady. A guy who didn't have all the measurables in the draft; but is making an impact as a rookie. A guy who is just a football player and a guy who is smart and showing that intangibles at the position are very hard for scouts to see at a combine; and are very easy for many GM's and executives to miss on.

Something very special is going on in Cleveland right now. The Browns have a real shot to be the story of the entire league right now. This is a special time of year to follow the Browns and when they can play good football and give the fans a reason to get behind the team there's not a better time of year in any sport than November-December in Cleveland. With McCoy getting his 4th straight start this Sunday, the Browns look to knock off yet another Super Bowl contender.

If they can do that, no matter what happens from that point forward; this stretch will be talked about for years and remembered forever.

Colt McCoy: pre-3rd start links

The Nosebleeds NFL Blog
Northeast Ohio is pretty excited that the Browns finally might have found their guy. The excitement has transcended through local and national media. Here's what some folks are saying:

Rookie focus: QB Colt McCoy looks to turn around Browns
"One of the first things we did with the Browns was to go to Canton and see the Hall of Fame. If that could be the way I'm remembered, it would be the perfect ending." [USA Today]

No controversy for QB as McCoy poised to start
''I'm here for whatever they ask me to do. Again, that's a coaches' decision,'' McCoy said of a possible third consecutive start. ''I know Jake and Seneca aren't practicing today, and I treat it the same way I have the last several weeks — to prepare like I'm the starter every time. Whether it ends that way or not, I'm going to be prepared to play.'' [Akron Beacon Journal]

More quotes from Mangini
"A lot of young guys when they go in, there's real jitters, but Colt, with that role, just seemed at home: broke down the teams, spoke to the team the night before he started. It was natural; none of it was forced and that is one of the most positive things I've seen." [Boston Globe]

I'm getting excited. All my friends who are Browns fans are really feeling good about this kid. The morale of the fan base is really high again and times are not rotten as they were when this season started. More on this as we build to the moment which is kickoff at Sunday at 1:00 PM ET.

Colt McCoy and start #3

And I'll be in the Dawg Pound for my birthday to see this one. It's looking more and more like my source was good, doesn't it?

Pro Football Talk is running with their version of the story. I tried to tip Mike Florio off on Sunday night when I got the information but he didn't want to go with it at that time.

Keep it locked right here, I'll continue to update what I hear.
