nba news Union plans legal action over rise in techs

The NBA players association is planning legal action over the league's decision to issue more technical fouls for complaining.nba news Billy Hunter, the executive director of the union, said in a statement Thursday that the players weren't consulted about the rules changes, which he called "an unnecessary and unwarranted overreaction" by the league."We intend to file an appropriate legal challenge," Hunter said. The NBA has told players they will be whistled for technicals for overt gestures, even if they aren't directed at a referee, running up to an official to contest a call, or other actions that don't show proper respect for the game. That figures to create a rise in technical fouls, which come with heavier fines this season. There were four called in a 16-second span of Boston's exhibition victory over New York on Wednesday, with Celtics All-Star Kevin Garnett being ejected after picking up two of them for arguing.

The league put the policy in place this season after saying its research showed fans felt that the players complained too much, which Hunter disputes.nba news "We have not seen any increase in the level of 'complaining' to the officials and we believe that players as a whole have demonstrated appropriate behavior toward the officials," Hunter said. "Worse yet, to the extent the harsher treatment from the referees leads to a stifling of the players' passion and exuberance for their work, we fear these changes may actually harm our product."

An Entire NBA Division Of European Teams? David Stern Says It Might Happen

David Stern has hinted of a possible contraction of the NBA in the future, meaning that a team or teams might be going bye-bye.

And what better way to back up that supposedly money-saving venture? Why, with expansion to Europe, of course.

According to this story on ESPN.com, Stern envisions an entire NBA division comprised of European teams in the next decade or so.

"I think we'll have a division and I think the Heat will play in Boston one night and then they'll go to Paris and spend a couple days on the Champs-Elysses shopping and relaxing," Stern said. "And then they'll go and play five teams. And when they finish that, they'll play them again. Then they'll come home, having had a nice trip to Europe and they'll be finished with their European obligations."

Alrighty then. Nothing says "save money" like back-and-forth European travel.

Legendary NASCAR Executive Jim Hunter Dies

NASCAR Vice President of Corporate Communications Jim Hunter died Friday night in Daytona Beach after a year-long battle with cancer.

Almost always seen wearing a NASCAR #48 ball cap -- referencing the sport's 1948 beginnings -- Hunter was a legendary figure in the sport, having worked as a racing journalist, public relations specialist, president of Darlington Raceway and ultimately as a top executive with the sanctioning body during a 40-year career with NASCAR.

(He's pictured at Darlington Raceway in 2008 with the Charlotte Observer's Jim Utter, at left, and Sirius NASCAR Radio's Claire B. Lang, right).

"Jim Hunter was one of NASCAR's giants,'' NASCAR Chairman Brian France said. "For more than 40 years Jim was part of NASCAR and its history. He loved the sport but loved the people even more.

"It seems as if everyone in the sport called him a friend. Jim will forever be missed by the NASCAR community.''

Juan Pablo Montoya Wins Talladega Pole

Juan Pablo Montoya has captured the pole position for Sunday's AMP Energy Juice 500 at Talladega Superspeedway with a lap of 184.640 miles per hour.

It was Montoya's third pole of the year. He also won the top starting spots at New Hampshire and Indianapolis in July.

"We always run really good here," Montoya said afterwards. "We always have good race cars. Right now, (we'll) get ourselves a good pit stall for the race and then see what happens. We'll be ok. Talladega is more about how the car is going to be in the draft and everything. We came with the same thing we had here in the spring, we ran really well. Both (Earnhardt Ganassi) cars ran really well."

Clint Bowyer won the second starting spot with a lap of 184.498 mph. Kurt Busch was third, followed by the unlikely Joe Nemechek and Jeff Gordon.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. qualified sixth, followed by some other lesser-ranked drivers, including Dave Blaney in seventh, Ryan Newman, Casey Mears and Sam Hornish Jr.

Recap: Toronto Raptors 101 - Cleveland Cavaliers 81

Andrea Bargnani finished with 20 points and Linas Kleiza had 19, as the Toronto Raptors took a 101-81 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Air Canada Centre.

DeMar DeRozan added 14 points, while Reggie Evans pulled in 14 rebounds for the Raptors, who rebounded from Wednesday's season-opening loss to New York.

Antawn Jamison had 13 points to pace the Cavaliers, who had recorded a home win against Boston on Wednesday to begin the year and open the post-LeBron James era.

Anthony Parker scored 10 for Cleveland, which played without forward Anderson Varejao. He left the team to be with his father, who was scheduled to have heart surgery Friday.

Toronto held an advantage of several possessions at halftime, but took full control in the third quarter. Cleveland was woeful in those 12 minutes, despite 11 points from Jamison, shooting just 6-for-21.

Toronto made twice as many field goals, as Kleiza led the way with 13 points. With under four minutes to go in the period, he sank a jumper before the Raptors got the ball back following a Jamison turnover. Jamison blocked Kleiza's layup at the other end, but Kleiza got the rebound before getting a layup to fall, capping a 10-2 burst for a 69-52 advantage.

After Jamison followed with a three, Toronto scored the final eight points of the period for a 77-55 lead, and the Raptors cruised in the fourth quarter.

Toronto led by as many as eight in the first quarter, though took a 24-20 lead into the second after a late Cavaliers rally.

The Raptors continued to play in front, and extended their lead to 44-32 following two Jarrett Jack foul shots with 1:05 left. But Cleveland scored six of the final eight points of the half, and Parker's three at the buzzer made it a 46-38 game.

Leandro Barbosa and Sonny Weems each scored 13 off the bench for Toronto, which shot 47.6 percent…Cleveland made 38.1 percent of its shots and got to the free throw line only 10 times, making eight…Cavaliers guard Ramon Sessions was 1-of-10 from the field…Prior to this season, Toronto had won four of the last 22 matchups with Cleveland. The last time the Raptors won the season series was in 2003-04, James' rookie year.

Talladega's 'Big Ones' Leave Drivers With Coin-Toss Odds in Avoiding Carnage

When the 43 best drivers in the country take to Talladega Speedway Sunday on Halloween, they will carry with them an unbroken streak of big-crash horrors dating back to the spring of 2007.

The so-called Big One -- which we'll arbitrarily define as a crash involving 10 or more cars -- has occurred at the 2.66-mile, high-banked oval for six straight races now.

Considering NASCAR's more lenient "Boys, have at it" policy in 2010, and the fact that more than half the field -- 24 of 43 cars -- crashed at one point or another in the spring race, the odds of a quiet Sunday afternoon in Alabama seem slim indeed.

In fact, the odds are slim indeed.

Based on the last 11 races, dating back to the spring 2005 event, an average of 20.45 of the 43 cars have been involved in a yellow flag for a crash -- or slightly less than half the field.

For every race.

If you count the fact that a number of cars were involved in two incidents in a single race, the average jumps to 23.45 cars per race involved in incidents, or slightly more than half the field.

Either way you look at it, the odds in recent years of any one driver getting involved in a wreck at Talladega are about 50-50, or a coin toss.

Raptors Jump To Eight-Point Lead, Cavs Trim It To Four After 12 Minutes

Toronto jumped on the Cavaliers 16-8 midway through the first quarter tonight, but Cleveland ended the quarter on a 12-8 run of their own and trail 24-20 after one.

Seven Cavs got in the scoring column and three lead the way with 4 points.

Another update to follow at halftime.

Who I like, New Orelans version

This is truly a tough spot for the Steelers.

New Orleans on Halloween night is not only going to be loud, it's going to be hostile. While Steelers fans often overrun many visiting stadiums, I don't expect that to happen this week.

Saints fans aren't likely to sell tickets for a game pitting the last two Super Bowl champions in one of the biggest night games of the season.

The fact that Brett Keisel and Aaron Smith are both likely out of action also bothers me.

Though we know the Saints won't run the ball a ton, Ziggy Hood and Nick Eason are going to get a workout rushing the passer - with little in the terms of backups behind them.

Also, Smith and Keisel are the two tallest defensive linemen on the roster. Keisel, in particular, has very long arms and is good at batting down passes, something that comes into play against 6-0 Drew Brees.

The other thing that gives me caution is the defending Super Bowl champion factor.

Yes, I know the Saints have struggled, but so did the Steelers in both of their seasons after winning the Super Bowl.

If you remember those seasons, the Steelers invariably lost to lesser teams but somehow got inspired to beat the good ones.

And make no doubt about it, the Steelers will have the full attention of the Saints.

Pittsburgh could certainly win this game and I wouldn't be surprised if the Steelers did.

But they aren't going to go 8-0 on the road this season and I like them to win their remaining road games - yes, even at Baltimore Dec. 5.

Take New Orleans, 28-27

The College Basketball season is a couple of weeks away and Ohio State is sitting pretty at #4

Don't look now, but the College Basketball season is right around the corner.  The first AP Poll of the year has been released, with familiar names sprinkled throughout the Top-25.  Beginning the year at #1 will be the Duke Blue Devils, the defending National Champions.  The Blue Devils are loaded with talent and will try to become the first repeat champions since Florida did it 4 years ago.

The Big Ten is well represented with Michigan State at #2, while the Buckeyes of Ohio State sit at #4.  Thad Matta has his best recruiting clas yet in Columbus and should be right in the thick of it come March Madness time.  Kansas State, sandwiched in-between the two Big Ten powers, starts at #3, the highest ranking the Wildcats have seen to start a season since 1962.

The Big Ten is also represented in the Top-15 by llinois and Purdue, 13 and 14 respectively, and you can surely bet Wisconsin will find it's way into the Top-25 before season's end.

As for Butler, the surprise National runner-up last season, they come in at 17.

The full poll is below:

  1. Duke
  2. Michigan State
  3. Kansas State
  4. Ohio State
  5. Pittsburgh
  6. Villanova
  7. Kansas
  8. North Carolina
  9. Florida
  10. Syracuse
  11. Kentucky
  12. Gonzaga
  13. Illinois
  14. Purdue
  15. Missouri
  16. Baylor
  17. Butler
  18. Washington
  19. Memphis
  20. Georgetown
  21. Virginia Tech
  22. Temple
  23. Tennessee

Byron Scott Praises Hickson, Gibson After Win

Cavaliers head coach Byron Scott had plenty to be excited about after last night's win over Boston. In particular, the play of J.J. Hickson and Daniel Gibson.

When asked about Gibson, Scott wasn't shy:

"He's been great all preseason and all training camp. I knew he wasn't going to lose confidence in himself. I think everyone was a little nervous and excited. We made a few mistakes that we hadn't been making, but you have to give them (Boston) credit because they are one of the best defensive teams in the league. We came back in the second half and did a heck of a job."

The real star fo the game was Hickson, however, who showed why the Cavaliers drafted him in the 1sst round a couple years ago:

"He was great tonight. He did some really good things on the offensive end and some really good things on the defensive end. He had some lapses on the defensive end…but his activity tonight and his aggressiveness was fantastic. He got us off to a great start and in the second half, he didn't have a letdown. Hopefully, it's a sign of things to come."

World Series Game Two Tonight: Do You Care Who Wins?

The San Francisco Giants have a 1-0 lead over the Texas Rangers in the 2010 World Series and I am wondering…do you care? When the Indians are done, is baseball done for you for the season?

I have a marginal interest, as a baseball fan, but when the WS is likely to stretch into November, it does feel like "enough is enough".

Your thoughts?

Woodley, Adams return

The Steelers got some good news Thursday when LaMarr Woodley and Flozell Adams both returned to practice.

It would appear both will be ready to play Sunday at New Orleans.

© Brett Keisel (hamstring) is still out - though he could return Friday.

Also missing practice was center Maurkice Pouncey, who was out with an illness. That's perhaps a more troubling issue, especially if he's still sick on Friday.

Rookies need as much preparation as possible, particularly heading into what will be a loud, raucious environment in New Orleans.

© Apparently, the league thought so highly of the new, kinder, more gentle James Harrison that it is now giving him gifts.

Harrison was awarded an interception in an official scoring change on Miami's final offensive play last Sunday.

Maybe I was seeing things, but the ball appeared to hit the ground.

It doesn't matter in the context of the game - Miami turned the ball over on downs on the play.

But it could in terms of contract bonuses and such.

The Dolphins, by the way, have already appealed the scoring change.

Tony Stewart Says Repaved Daytona Will Feature Even Closer Racing

The repaved Daytona International Speedway might as well be a brand-new track, two-time Sprint Cup champ Tony Stewart said Thursday.

Although the project is still only about 75 percent complete, Stewart had a chance to run a production car through turns three and four before a ceremonial appearance at the 2.5-mile speedway Thursday to help paint the new start-finish line.

"I got to rip through three and four and it's not the same race track, I can promise you," Stewart said before taking a roller in hand and joining track president Joie Chitwood III to paint the first few black-and-white squares of the start-finish line. "This place is going to have a totally new look to the drivers and the teams. We're going to fill every square inch of the race track because the surface is so even now."

"tt's going to have a ton of grip," he said. "Before, you had to really work on your handling" because it was so bumpy. "Now, handling is not going to be as crucial. You're going to have more cars in a tighter pack, as wide as they can get, and literally you'll be able to use every inch of the track. And guys will be comfortable doing it, knowing how smooth this surface is now.

"It's going to allow us to go places we've not been able to go and run a lot closer width-wise.

Cavs Win, But Jamison Not Happy With Role

Can't we all just get along?

After scoring an improbable, yet encouraging, 95-87 win over the Boston Celtics, everything should have been roses in Cleveland's locker room.

So much for all that. Antwan Jamison came off the bench and sounded off on his displeasure after the game.

"It is what it is," Jamison said. "I don't know what the role is going to (entail). I don't know how many minutes I'll play. I'm up in the air, just like you."

Jamison is a respected veteran and has the right to voice his opinion. That being said, is minutes after a great start to a season the right time to pipe up? Hopefully Byron Scott can get Jamison to buy into the team vibe.

Cavaliers Have The Q Rockin' In Win Over Boston

The Cleveland Cavaliers are 1-0, undefeated. Sure, it won't last, but for one night fans of the Cavaliers can soak in a gratifying win that rivals any in team history.

Coming back from 11-points down late in the 3rd quarter, the Wine and Gold out-scored the Boston Celtics 27-14 in the 4th Quarter to win going away 95-87.

Now, there are no delusions here – I know the Celtics played last night in an emotional game against LeBron's Heat – a game that had a playoff atmosphere from start to finish. I know the Celtics were a bit weary playing a road game on the back-half of a back-to-back.

I don't care.

No way the Celtics wanted to lose this one – not after handling the Heat with relative ease. Similarly, the Cavaliers wanted to win it in the worst way. It was the Celtics, afterall, that embarrassed the Cavaliers the last time the team played a game that mattered at The Q. Add the LeBron motivation, and the Cavaliers wanted to make a point.

Message delivered. The team did the city proud tonight, and the fans did the team and player proud. The crowd was into it form beginning to end, and by the time the final horn sounded the Q seemed to be near-playoff intensity – a far cry from the way the place sounded last May.

I don't know what the Cavaliers will do the final 81 games this season. For one night, I care little.

Browns LT Joe Thomas joins the dipshit brigade

The Browns are about to have three quarterbacks healthy. This has prompted Seneca Wallace (who is a career back-up, nothing more, nothing less) to declare that Eric Mangini (who needs to be fired) needs to decide on a guy between him, Jake Delhomme, and Colt McCoy.

And that opened the door for Joe Thomas to put his foot in his mouth:

"All three have made a real good case for himself," Thomas said. "It's a lot better than the situation we were in last year when we couldn't find one who could play. This year it's like we have three guys who can play. So I don't think we can go wrong."

Really, Joe?

Delhomme has thrown 1 TD, 4 interceptions, and has a rating of 48.2 for the year. This is coming off a season in which he turned it over about 30 times.

Joe Thomas is a moron. Way to talk out of both sides of your mouth (last year and in years past he insisted that Brady Quinn could play).

"I don't think we can go wrong". Pssht. Joe, that's all that has happened in Cleveland for over a decade. Just shut up and block.

David Bowens Named AFC Defensive Player Of The Week

Who would've thought that at some point this season, linebacker David Bowens would earn the AFC Defensive Player of the Week honor?

While fellow teammate Scott Fujita had a great game too, it's not often that a defensive player, especially a linebacker, returns two interceptions for touchdowns in the same game. Bowens had touchdown returns of 30 and 64 yards off of Drew Brees this past Sunday in the Browns' 30-17 win over the Saints.

Celtics Expand Lead But Cavs Still In It, 73-68 Entering Fourth Quarter

Boston expanded their lead to double figures in the third quarter but the Cavaliers have not quit and Cleveland heads into the final twelve minutes trailing the Celtics 73-68.

J.J. Hickson continues to lead the Cavs with 19, while Ramon Sessions has 12 and Jamario Moon has 10.

Rajon Rondo continues to lead the Celtics with 17 as the Cavaliers try desperately to win their season opener at the Q.

Sanders admits the push has helped

I spoke to Emmanuel Sanders today and he admitted that Mike Tomlin making him compete for a spot on the active roster each week has been good for him.

Sanders, by the way, was named the AFC's special teams player of the week for his effort against Miami.

© Brett Keisel, Aaron Smith (obviously), LaMarr Woodley and Flozell Adams did not practice Wednesday.

Keisel, Woodley and Adams will try to go Thursday or Friday.

© The big question this week is whether the Saints will even try to run the ball against the Steelers.

With New Orleans' weapons, they have the ability to spread the Steelers out and pass on every play.

That becomes even more likely if Reggie Bush can come back this week - though he didn't practice Wednesday.

If Woodley can't play, that takes away one of the deterrents for that strategy as well - though I expect Woodley to play.

© Word out of Cleveland is that Mohamed Massaquoi harbors no ill will toward James Harrison and isn't holding a grudge.

I'm sure Harrison will sleep better at night knowing that.

Talladega Welcomes Michael Waltrip Back to Sprint Cup

Seeing as it would be just his fourth start of the waning 2010 season, is Michael Waltrip worried about shaking off any rust when he rolls onto the 2.66-mile Talladega Superspeedway for Friday's first practice?

Hardly.

"Especially at Talladega because I've won there before, I feel like I know that place as good as anybody," Waltrip told FanHouse.com Tuesday. "It's just something that I have no apprehension about in terms of how we're going to perform. I'm just ready to go after it."

The longtime Sprint Cup driver and two-time Daytona 500 champion will attempt Sunday's AMP Energy 500 at Talladega, his first since racing in the April event at the Alabama behemoth. Waltrip won at Talladega in 2003, one of his four career wins. He currently serves as an analyst on Showtime's Inside NASCAR television program.

His last time out at Talladega looked promising after he drove to the front and led twice for a total of four laps. But on lap 84, just 14 laps after finding the lead a second time, Waltrip was caught in a 10-car crash on the frontstretch tri-oval.

Hendrick, Gordon Confirm Three-Year AARP Sponsorship

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) -- Rick Hendrick never panicked as the season stretched on and he still didn't have a sponsorship deal for Jeff Gordon.

Why? Because he always had a contingency plan to fall back on. It gave him the ability to be discerning when it came to the four-time NASCAR champion.

Then came the potential pairing with the AARP Foundation, which began talks on a sponsorship program with Hendrick Motorsports in September. The deal quickly fell into place, and the foundation's "Drive to End Hunger" campaign was announced Wednesday as Gordon's primary sponsor for the next three years.

"We had a deal in our pocket. It was a verbal agreement," Hendrick said of the second suitor, which he refused to identify. "But this one came only faster, quicker and had more potential."

More potential for both sides.

NFL will suspend players for head shots

The news came across the bottom line towards the tail end of last night's Monday Night Football game. The NFL will have a zero-tolerance policy for head shots going forward.

Little did I know on Sunday when I was seeing guys like Desean Jackson, Sam Bradford, and Joshua Cribbs take huge hits; we were seeing history.

It's going to be interesting to see who the first violator of the new rule is. And how this rule will most certainly evolve. I'm not happy about it. They're ruining football as we know it.

One thing I want to know: how has the game changed from the 90's? Was there less big hits to the head then?

Dale Earnhardt Jr. Sees a Glimmer of Racing Sunlight

MARTINSVILLE, Va. -- The legions of fans of Junior Nation rose as one on lap 285 of the Tums Fast Relief 500 at Martinsville Speedway Sunday, waving the little green flags passed out by the race sponsor and screaming their lungs out against the din of the more than three dozen race cars circling the half-mile track here.

Their man, Dale Earnhardt Jr., had clawed his way to the front and taken the lead from Jeff Gordon during a green flag run at the midpoint of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

And he led 90 of the next 93 laps -- more than his total for the entire year before Sunday's race. Coming into Martinsville -- where Earnhardt has never won -- he had led a total of 71 laps in five races.

But after more than doubling his laps led total Sunday, Earnhardt was only partially satisfied. He faded during the long green flag run over the final 98 laps and finished seventh.

"Well, this isn't quite good enough," Earnhardt said. "We have to run way better than this. I can come in here and get a top-10 unless we have a major, major issue in the setup."

Spotter's Stand: Jeff Gordon vs. Kurt Busch Tops Martinsville Drama

Maybe this is what NASCAR's Robin Pemberton had in mind in January when his "Have at it, boys" line became the buzz phrase of the 2010 season.

In fact, it may have been even better.

Sunday at Martinsville, Va., couldn't have been scripted more perfectly in terms of drivers leaving the .526-mile bullring irritated with each other and how the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship battle is setting up with four races to go.

Oh, and some guy named Dale Earnhardt Jr. managed to have the South Central Virginia crowd roaring for the 90 laps he led -- the most he's paced all season.

But Jeff Gordon and Kurt Busch -- personalities who have little crossover appeal within their separate fan bases -- provided the most interesting episode.

Gordon's most recent history with Busch came a quarter-lap before the ultimate payback, but their past history this season includes a cut tire on Busch's No. 2 that left him steamed at Gordon after finishing 32nd on the Infineon road course in June.

Who I like - Miami edition

Credit Mike Tomlin for trying to avoid a distraction with James Harrison by sending him home on Wednesday. But that, apparently, only continued the distraction into Thursday.

That said, the Steelers are a veteran group and should be focused on the task at hand, beating the Miami Dolphins.

Three-game road trips are never easy and that starts this week at Miami.

Getting the first win is the most important thing.

The Steelers will handle Miami's running game and force Chad Henne to beat them. I just don't think he's capable of that.

Pittsburgh will win, 23-16

Post-Miami thoughts

A wise man said – OK, it was Craig Wolfley – that during the course of a season, you win a game you should lose and lose a game you should win.

That was probably the case for the Steelers on Sunday as they won a game they probably should have lost.

Why should they have lost?

The defense didn't have a very good game. Yes, the final numbers aren't bad, but as the injuries mounted, the Dolphins moved the ball pretty easily.

The Steelers can be thankful that Miami's offense bogged down again and again inside the 20.

Chad Henne missed some throws and checked down a couple of other times instead of taking a shot at the end zone to 6-4 wide receiver Brandon Marshall.

© As we saw, Lawrence Timmons just isn't the same Lawrence Timmons when he has to move to outside linebacker as he did at times Sunday to replace injured LaMarr Woodley.

Timmons' game is built on speed and his explosiveness. He's not a guy who's going to line up and beat you with his pass rush moves.

I would expect Woodley to at least try to play next week at New Orleans, but if he doesn't, the Steelers have to at least take a long look at starting rookie Jason Worilds in place of Woodley.

© We won't know for sure until Monday, but it doesn't look good for Aaron Smith and his torn triceps muscle.

The Steelers are a little more optimistic about Flozell Adams' ankle injury.

© Everywhere I go, people are hammering me this year for my NFL picks. But I ask you, who can figure this league out this year?

Baltimore should have had a cakewalk against Buffalo Sunday and probably should have lost.

New Orleans did lose at home to Cleveland.

Tennessee is looking a little better, but that's still a team the Steelers beat on the road with Dennis Dixon and Charlie Batch putting up high school football quarterback numbers.

Picking games against the spread this season is a losing proposition.

Eric Mangini is still a fat fuckhead

In the wake of LeBron James playing the victim with his new Nike commercial, the door is really open for the Cleveland Browns to steal the stage this time of year.

The excitement of Cleveland could all be built around Colt McCoy after his big win in New Orleans, that is if he was announced the starting Quarterback. Which Eric Mangini isn't ready to do:

"With the decision as we get Seneca back and Jake back, which we may have a chance for one or both against New England, then I'll just sit down and think about it. I'll talk to Brian (Daboll), I'll talk to Mike (Holmgren); I'll definitely get his input. He's been through these decisions quite a few times. It's got to get to the point where it really is a decision as opposed to where we're at now, where we just got a couple games under our belts."

And why would they? When Cleveland can watch 30-year old career back-up Seneca Wallace or 35-year old over the hill player Jake Delhomme and feed to the fans that these veterans give them a better chance to win each week.

This is how Cleveland has gotten to where Cleveland is at now. Go ahead and start these guys. Don't get a feel for what this kid can do and draft another QB in the first round when we have other needs. After all, this is Cleveland.

LeBron James, Miami Heat, Lose Opener In Boston 88-80

In a game eerily similar to some losses the Cavaliers suffered the past few years, the Miami Heat and their star-studded roster laid an egg Tuesday Night in Boston 88-80. LeBron James bolted for Miami after 7 seasons in Cleveland, the reason being he felt he had a better chance to win multiple titles in South Beach.

That may be true, in time, but in this game LeBron's Heat looked much like some of the Cavaliers teams of the past. James scored 31 points, but was the only starter in on the good side of the plus/minus(+1). Miami's "Big Three" was not good enough to get past a tough Boston team on Tuesday night. Wade and Bosh added 13 and 8 points, respectively, and shot a combined 7-of-27 from the field.

Ray Allen and Paul Pierce scored 20 and 19 points, respectively, as the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics held off the new-look Miami Heat, 88-80, in arguably the most anticipated regular season opener in NBA history.

The Heat grabbed everyone's attention in the offseason by acquiring two of the highest profile free agent acquisitions. Reigning two-time NBA MVP LeBron James, who fled Cleveland after seven seasons, and former Toronto All-Star power forward Chris Bosh joined forces with Dwyane Wade.

The blockbuster moves by Miami gave them three players with 17 All-Star appearances between them and tons of championship expectations. James and Bosh both signed six-year, $110.1 million contracts, and Wade was re-signed by the Heat for $107.5 million over six years.

Allen made five three-pointers, including a key three late in the game for the Celtics, who lost in seven games to the Lakers in the NBA Finals last season. Pierce pulled down nine rebounds. Glen Davis ended with 13 points.

James scored 15 points in the third quarter to get the Heat within six, 63-57. Miami cut the deficit to four, 68-64, on a James Jones three-pointer with over eight minutes to play.

The Celtics responded with a Davis layup and Pierce trey to extend their lead to 73-64. The TD Garden crowd started to chant "overrated" after Pierce made three free throws and Davis hit a jumper to give Boston an 83-70 advantage with over four minutes remaining.

Miami quickly silenced the crowd with a 10-0 run. James tallied five points during the run, including a driving layup to cut the deficit to 83-80 with 1:10 to go.

Allen essentially put the game away at the other end with a three-pointer from the corner with 49.8 seconds left. A Wade missed three led to two free throws from Pierce for an 88-80 game with 27.2 ticks left.

Eddie House missed a jumper to seal Miami's fate.

James, with his new uniform No. 6, made a jumper from the right wing just 1:07 into the game. After Rajon Rondo made a reverse layup, James was good on another jumper. However, the rest of the half was dominated by Boston.

Shaquille O'Neal's alley-oop dunk sparked a 12-2 Celtics run. Allen capped the spurt with a layup and three-pointer to make it a 14-6 contest with 4:47 left in the first.

Miami trailed by seven, 16-9, following 12 minutes of action due to a 4-of-17 shooting performance.

Holding a 21-13 margin early in the second, Boston put together a 20-9 run to create some distance. Allen tallied six points during the flurry, which O'Neal capped with two free throws for a 41-22 lead with 2:13 to go until half.

The Celtics took a 45-30 lead into the locker room. The Heat shot just 11- of-41 (26.8 percent) from the field in the first half. For comparison, Boston went 17-of-38 (44.7 percent) from the floor.

Trailing by 19, 53-34, Miami went on an 11-2 run to get back into the game. After drawing a blocking foul on Pierce, James made a pair of free throws to get the Heat within 10, 55-45, with about 4 1/2 minutes left in the third.

The Heat scored the final seven points of the quarter to make it a six-point game. House made a three-pointer, and James made two free throws and a layup to cut the deficit to 63-57 after three periods.

O'Neal scored nine points and grabbed seven rebounds in his Boston debut…Pierce hurt his lower back late in the third quarter, but he returned to the game early in the fourth…The Celtics shot 46.4 percent from the field, while the Heat made 36.5 percent of their shots…Celtics forward Kevin Garnett had 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Tuesday with Tomlin, preparing for life without Aaron Smith

Aaron Smith had surgery Monday to repair a torn tendon in his biceps and will be out indefinitely. That's the bad news.

The good news is that the Steelers are holding out hope Smith will be able to return at some point this season - though Mike Tomlin wouldn't put a timetable on it – so the Steelers aren't putting him on IR.

That could change if they get a rash of other injuries. But for the time being, Smith could possibly return.

© Tomlin is optimistic about getting Brett Keisel, LaMarr Woodley and Flozell Adams back this week for Sunday night's game at New Orleans.

All will be limited in practice to start the week.

© It looks like Trai Essex will be back this week. Though Tomlin wouldn't commit to a starter at right guard, the bet here is that if Essex is healthy, he'll start.

© You can hear me on FOX 970-AM every Tuesday night from 7 to 9 p.m. - beginning tonight - for the remainder of this season.

We'll be discussing the previous week's game and upcoming game for the Steelers each week.

Report: Jeff Gordon's New Sponsorship Deal to Be Announced Wednesday

The AARP Foundation and Jeff Gordon will team up in 2011, with the charity arm of the retired persons organization becoming the primary sponsor on Gordon's No. 24 Chevrolet for most of the NASCAR Sprint Cup races to promote a major anti-hunger campaign, the Charlotte Observer reported Monday.

The paper reported that the campaign will be coordinated by the foundation and will eventually involve other companies.

The new deal, however, doesn't mean that fans will no longer see Gordon's longtime primary sponsors, Dupont and Pepsi, on his No. 24 Chevrolet. Those two powerhouse companies are expected to sponsor the races that AARP Foundation doesn't cover, the Observer said.

More details of the sponsorship are expected to be announced at a Wednesday news conference.

Dupont is one of NASCAR's longest-running and most dedicated sponsors.

If Dupont steps away completely from some of the 2011 races, it will be the first time since the company began sponsoring Gordon beginning with his very first race at Atlanta at the end of 1992.

Cleveland is off this week, but the NFL plays on. What are five attractive games involving AFC teams?

Something different this week, occasioned by the Browns' startling win over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, which has surely energized the Cleveland fan base enough to make us wish that there was a game next week, and also to make us look forward eagerly to the next game, in two weeks against the Jets.

So which five games on the slate in week eight seem most attractive?

Obviously it would be a stretch to see any game "meaning something" to the Browns at this stage. It would take one heck of a winning streak to become contenders, after all, and so it really might not "help" if the Steelers or the Titans win or lose. But hey, what if a winning streak were to happen? Then we might say -- some time in December -- "Damn, if only the Steelers had lost that game during our bye week, we would have a chance to make the playoffs".

So let's take a look at what I consider to be the five most attractive games on this week's schedule involving AFC teams

                                                                   ************************************************

#5 -- Tennessee (5-2) at San Diego (2-5)

The Titans have hit their stride, it would seem, while the Chargers are shooting themselves in the foot week after week, literally losing a chance to take their game to overtime yesterday after a furious comeback against the Patriots when a game-tying field goal attempt hit the right upright and bounced away.

Tennessee is three games up on the Browns and -- realistically -- we aren't catching the Titans. Yet, even so, if they were to lose to San Diego and then we were to pick up win number three against the Jets and then win number four against the Patriots...

Hey, it doesn't hurt to dream.

#4 -- Seattle (4-2) at Oakland (3-4)

Did Ken Stabler and Cliff Branch sneak back into silver and black uniforms yesterday against the Broncos? Did Howie Long? Something sure happened in Denver that put one in mind of the old Raiders.

Oakland is a game up on the Browns and obviously is one team that the Browns could "catch" with a win and a Raiders' loss or two. If there is any one of the eleven teams with more wins than the Browns have -- and thus one of the seven Cleveland would have to pass to "make the playoffs" -- that it would be feasible to catch up to in short order, it might be the Raiders.

Have to start somewhere, right?

#3 -- Minnesota (2-4) at New England (5-1)

This game is another wherein an AFC team is probably too far ahead of the Browns -- as well as being too good to fall apart -- for it to make much difference whether they win or lose, but the match-up itself is attractive, as was the case with Titans at Chargers.

The Vikings have to be feeling both desperate and furious after their game last night with the Packers. Minnesota, however, has the good fortune to be playing in a division where they are only two wins from first place, and the Bears and Packers don't look good enough to blow away the competition. Ergo, the Vikes have to feel that a win or two would put them right back in the thick of things -- a win like they felt they deserved last night, and a win that they feel they were deprived of by bad calls.

The Patriots, meanwhile, survived a brain cramp at the end of the game from Bill Belichick, who elected to go for it on fourth down near midfield with limited time left, failed, and then watched San Diego, with a short field and needing a field goal to tie, miss sending their game to overtime by -- literally -- inches.

This one should be a really good game if Brett Favre can go, although that is quite a question mark right now.

But if he can, this could be a real barn-burner in Massachusetts.

#2 -- Pittsburgh (5-1) at New Orleans (4-3)

If any team will be fired up this week, it will be the Saints. They laid an egg yesterday against the Browns and are looking very tentative in their Super Bowl defense. They are in trouble in their own division, with the Buccaneers and the Falcons both doing very well, so if New Orleans is going to defend their title, they need to get on a roll.

And the Steelers, ah the Steelers, The Controversy Kids. First there was the Ben Roethlisberger drama, and then the James Harrison head-hunting escapade against the Browns, and finally the "did he score, did he fumble, whose ball is it, who recovered, you are giving the Steelers the ball where?" game yesterday. (By the way, I was secretly pleased at all of the stress and hand-wringing of the Dolphins' fans yesterday. Call me shallow for finding pleasure in a Miami loss -- especially a gut-wrenching loss -- in any game in any sport right now. I may well be. But it is an odd feeling indeed to be secretly happy for a Pittsburgh win. So thanks, LeBron.)

This one should be a really, really entertaining game. I think it is safe to say that New Orleans will show up ready this time, and Pittsburgh would feel a little bad, no doubt, if they followed the Browns into the same venue Cleveland won handily in and came away with a loss.

It sure wouldn't hurt to stabilize three games behind the Steelers instead of four games behind going into week nine.

So...go Saints!

#1 -- Miami (3-3) at Cincinnati (2-4)

And here, for the second week in a row, the team from that place in Florida plays one of the Browns' rivals.

Miami has achieved something really bizarre so far this year. They are 3-0 on the road and 0-3 at home. Sounds as if they have taken their talents anywhere but South Beach. Ah, but they really should have won at home yesterday, and even my new-found dislike for Miami can't make me deny that "they wuz robbed" against Pittsburgh.

Meanwhile, the Bengals put a scare into Atlanta in Georgia, coming from way behind to lead briefly before falling to the Falcons. A loss this week against the Dolphins and the Browns, by virtue of their win earlier this season against Cincinnati, would technically put Cincy in the cellar. T.O and Ochocinco and all.

Wouldn't that be sweet?

                                                                   ************************************************

And there we have it: Five games to entice on Halloween, while Browns' fans get to bask for two weeks in the sentence "We just beat the Super Bowl champs in their building".

Go Browns!

Will You Watch Or Did You Watch Celtics-Heat?

I am curious as to whether you will watch, or if you read this after the fact, if you did watch the Miami Heat take on the Boston Celtics tonight?

I, for one, will skip the game, and probably just check the score now and then on NBA.com or on Yahoo.

And hey, the good news is, if the Celtics should prevail, Miami — since the game this evening is the only game involving Eastern Conference teams — would, for one day at least, be 15th and dead last in the conference standings!

Alderson meets with Mets owners

Sandy Alderson has met with the New York Mets ownership group, and the team appears close to hiring a new general manager. Former president of the Oakland Athletics and chief executive officer of the San Diego Padres, Alderson met Tuesday with Mets controlling owner Fred Wilpon, club president Saul Katz and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon, the owner's son.

Lee’s wife was taunted at Yankee Stadium (AP)

The wife of ace left-hander Cliff Lee was among family members of Texas Rangers players subjected to obscenities and taunts during the AL championship series at Yankee Stadium. She said fans even were spitting at them from a higher section. "I brush that off as fans being fans. You can't control 50,000 people and what they're going to do," Lee said Tuesday, the day before pitching…

‘Dega crapshoot will play factor in chase

The restrictor-plate tracks are always a toss up and this fall's race at Talladega figures to be no different. Jamie McMurray has finished 1st and 2nd in the last two races at Talladega, narrowly finishing behind Kevin Harvick this spring. Juan Pablo Montoya is another buy low option here for those in fantasy leagues. Montoya came home third at the track earlier this year but beware his other finishes have left things to be desired. Then there is the curious case of David Ragan who has 3 top 10's in 7 starts and has finished no worse then 17th save the fall 2007 race. Kurt Busch is perhaps the best restrictor-plate driver to never have won a race at one of the tracks. Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman are also viable options but mind you Stewart hasn't finished better then 16th at the track since he left Joe Gibbs racing. Now that I've mentioned the other drivers let me be clear. Despite what anyone says Denny Hamlin and Jimmie Johnson are again the guys to go with. Let's face it these guys can overcome so much right now. There teams are the top in the sport and nothing seems to get in the way of them making a run at the win at any track for the remainder of the year. If you can go with only one of the two go with Johnson, afterall he does have 4 championships for a reason. Even if the reason is skirting the rules at times. Oh yea Greg Biffle, Brad Keselowski who won the fall race there last year, and Clint Bowyer are also solid plays but I'd go with anyone mentioned earlier over them. The fact that Dale Earnhardt Jr is a former winner at Talladega and that he led last week will undoubtedly create interest in him this week as well.

NFL Releases Pro Bowl Rosters

While the game itself is usually not much fun to watch, finding out who was selected to the NFL Pro Bowl is always interesting. A mixture of fan, player and coach voting, who is selected to play in the largely lackluster game is often as much of a popularity contest as anything.

And as it will always be when you have to narrow down an entire league into two rosters, deserving people will be left out and some not-so-deserving people will sneak in. This year, of course, is no exception as there are some major head scratchers and down right interesting pairings.

The complete list of AFC and NFC rosters can be found here. After taking a quick glance, here are three of my rapid fire reactions:

-The most awkward group of selections is the NFC quarterbacks. Drew Brees gets the nod to start (no argument here) while Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers back him up. Yes, the very same Favre and Rodgers who played together in Green Bay. The same Favre who never embraced the role of the mentor and was ultimately replaced by Rodgers. I have no doubt that they will be very pleasant in front of the media, but you have to imagine that it will be uncomfortable for the both of them.

-The biggest slight has to be the exclusion of any Cincinnati Bengals, who have the honor of being the only division champion to not have a player selected. At first I found this troubling, but when I realized there is not a player on their roster I'd put in over someone on the AFC team I realized it was a smart move.

-The biggest surprise to me was the inclusion of Wes Welker. It is not that I do not think he is deserving (he is first in the NFL in receptions and second in receiving yards), but I could not imagine him getting in over the much ballyhooed Randy Moss.

Who do you think was the biggest snub? Which player got in do you think should be watching from home? Let us know in the comments section below.
