Terrelle Pryor Leads Buckeyes Past Hawkeyes In Big Ten Showdown

Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor rallied his team from behind, and Dan Herron scored the game-winning touchdown with under two minutes remaining as No. 8 Ohio State emerged with a 20-17 win over No. 21 Iowa.

Pryor passed for 195 yards and rushed for 78 more, including a key 14-yard scramble for first down on the go-ahead drive. But it was Herron's bruising one-yard touchdown run with 1:47 on the clock that gave the Buckeyes their fourth straight win and kept them in a tie for the conference lead.

Ohio State (10-1, 6-1 Big Ten) remained knotted with Wisconsin and Michigan State atop the standings.

Iowa (7-4, 4-3) suffered its second straight loss and fell two games back in the Big Ten.

A frustrated Pryor pulled his helmet off and stared at the ground after DeVier Posey dropped a 50-yard pass in the right side of the end zone, letting a sure TD slip through his hands.

But his bitterness quickly turned to jubilation during a go-ahead drive that was saved for the Buckeyes by their slippery quarterback.

Pryor scrambled 14 yards for a first down two plays after Posey's drop, setting up the rest of a 76-yard drive that culminated in Herron's burst over the goal line to make it 20-17 Ohio State with 1:47 remaining in the game.

Iowa failed to convert a 4th-and-21 on the ensuing possession, all but ending the game.

Cavaliers face a red-hot Spurs team that has won 9 straight games.

The sizzling San Antonio Spurs shoot for their 10th consecutive win Saturday when they entertain the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Alamo City.

Tim Duncan became the Spurs' all-time NBA scoring leader with 19 points on Friday, while Tony Parker added 24 points and seven assists to help San Antonio defeat Utah, 94-82, at EnergySolutions Arena.

Duncan, who became the franchise's centerpiece after being selected first overall in the 1997 draft, needed only 13 points to pass David Robinson. Robinson, who played alongside Duncan for his final six seasons, recorded 20,790 points in 987 games for the Spurs. Duncan also played in his 988th game to pass Robinson for the team record, and pulled down 14 rebounds.

"It was a great win for us. It was not particularly pretty, kind of ups and down but great defensively and great to get that kind of milestone behind me," Duncan said. "It means a whole lot. More than anything it's a bragging right. I'm going to stick it to him a little bit. He started my career with me. It's been a long career so far. It's just great."

George Gervin is the franchise's all-time scoring leader, including ABA games, with 23,602 points.

Manu Ginobili added 15 points while DeJuan Blair and Richard Jefferson each had 11 for the red-hot Spurs, who are off to the best start in franchise history at 10-1 and are riding their longest winning streak since taking 11 straight from Feb. 11-March 6, 2008.

The Cavaliers, meanwhile, opened up a tough three-game road trip last night by falling to a 10-1 Hornets team in New Orleans. David West scored 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in that one as the Hornets built a big lead early before holding on for a 108-101 win.

Antawn Jamison scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Cleveland, which had a three-game win streak against the Hornets snapped. Jamison, by making three three-pointers, also became the third player in NBA history to record 7,000 rebounds, 900 three-pointers and 17,000 total points, joining Scottie Pippen and Dirk Nowitzki.

Friday also marked the return of former Cavs head coach Byron Scott to the Big Easy. Scott served as the head coach in New Orleans from 2004-09. He was fired last season after the club got off to a 3-6 start last season.

"I am very proud of our guys," Scott said. I thought we showed a lot of character tonight. We showed a lot of fight. We got down by 18 or 19 and we didn't mail it in. We kept playing and got it to a point in time that if we get a couple of breaks here and there we had an opportunity."

The Cavs, who will also visit Indiana on their trek, have won seven of nine over the Spurs but that was with superstar LeBron James, who is now with Miami.

Denny Hamlin Leads Title Contenders in Final NASCAR Practice

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- After struggling in opening practice Friday and qualifying a disappointing 37th for Sunday's NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season finale, championship leader Denny Hamlin showed some signs of progress, posting a top-five speed in Saturday's final practice session -- best among the three drivers in contention for the title.

Hamlin's lap of 169.284 mph in the No. 11 FedEx Toyota was fourth best in Happy Hour -- as the final practice is called -- well off Kasey Kahne's pole-winning mark of nearly 177 mph, but ahead of his closest championship rivals. Four-time defending series champ Jimmie Johnson, who trails Hamlin by 15 points in the title hunt, was 22nd fastest in final practice, while Kevin Harvick, who is 46 points behind Hamlin, was 29th fastest.

"I feel pretty good about my car,'' said Hamlin, who made a beeline from the garage to his team transporter after practice. "I feel like we have a better car than the 48 (Johnson). I feel like the 29 (Harvick) is maybe a hair better than us, but we are always a little bit slower in practice than what we are in the race.

"I'm confident that we're going to have a good day tomorrow. We've just got to make sure we stay on the right strategy.''

Harvick, whose Richard Childress Racing teammate Jeff Burton was fastest on the day, was similarly satisfied with his team's preparation -- so much so that he parked his No. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevy before the session ended.

"I'm excited,'' said Harvick. "It should be a fun day tomorrow.''

Kevin Harvick Comes Full Circle From Dramatic Cup Debut

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Sitting on stage just to the left of his two championship rivals for a final NASCAR championship contenders press conference, Kevin Harvick leaned back in his chair and smiled, listening to Sprint Cup series points leader Denny Hamlin and second place Jimmie Johnson trade barbs and confidently explain how they planned to rise to the occasion in Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

At times they looked awkward and uncomfortable with the situation -- each arguing the other was under greater pressure -- while Harvick, a 46-point third place underdog, couldn't have appeared more settled, looking every bit his nickname, "Happy" Harvick.

Pressure? That was 10 years ago.

"It seems like it has worked backwards for me with coming in and taking over Dale's (Earnhardt) car,'' said Harvick, 35, who was picked by Richard Childress to drive the late seven-time champion's car in the days after Dale Earnhardt's fatal crash in the 2001 Daytona 500.

"You started with the biggest press conference you'll ever be a part of in your whole life. You start with the weight of the world on your shoulders. As it's gone through the years, it's actually gotten easier. It's almost like you've gotten prepared for these situations before you even got started.

"There is no pressure this week. It's so easy, we're having fun, we're relaxed. We realize we have a small deficit to overcome and we've done it throughout the year beating both cars. So we're having fun with it.''

Kyle Busch Wins Nationwide Race, Danica Patrick Leads Lap, Finishes 19th

As Kyle Busch motored to a comfortable victory in the Nationwide season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway Saturday, Danica Patrick led her first lap in NASCAR racing before settling for a 19th-place finish, nonetheless her best ever in the series.

Busch dominated the event before winning by about a second over Kevin Harvick. Series champion Brad Keselowski was third, followed by Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Trevor Bayne.

It was Busch's record-settiing 13th victory in the Nationwide series this year, and it clinched the owner's championship for Joe Gibbs Racing, even though Keselowski won the driver's title. Busch did not run in every race this year and thus did not compete for the driver's title.

"That says it all right there, boys!" Busch shouted on his radio as he took the checkered flag. "You guys are the stuff. I can't do it without you guys. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

"This is fun," he added while still circling the track. "This is what it is all about. I wish I had something for tomorrow, but we'll play with teammates tomorrow and try to get them one."

Highlights from the possible game of the year

In case you missed this game, we've got the video back-up:

The Weekend in Football

Tom Brady and Peyton Manning meet up again in their storied careers for another installment this weekend of what has came to be known as "Brady/Manning Bowl". This game highlights a weekend of what I think will be excellent match-ups (Giants/Eagles, Steelers/Raiders, & Falcons/Rams).

A look back at their match-ups over the course of time:

September 30th, 2001: Brady beats Peyton in his first career start.
November 30th, 2003: Patriots win 38-34 in the RCA Dome.
January 18th, 2004: Patriots beat Colts in the AFC Championship Game.
September 9th, 2004: Patriots win 27-24 to open up the season.
January 16th, 2005: Patriots beat Colts in AFC Divisional Playoff game nearly a year to the day later.
November 7th, 2005: Colts win 40-21 on Monday Night Football.
November 5th, 2006: Colts win 27-20. Brady throws 4 interceptions.
January 21, 2007: FINALLY in the postseason. Peyton and the Colts are victorious. This is how you knew it was their year.
November 4th, 2007: Brady and the Patriots win 27-20 in the RCA Dome on a pass to Kevin Faulk late in the game.
November 15th, 2009: Maybe the most epic match up in the series. Belicheck goes for it on 4th down on Sunday Night Football and comes up inches short, allowing an Indianapolis victory 35-34.

Can you imagine if John Elway and Dan Marino or Joe Montana and Warren Moon had this many epic shootouts in their history? And we're not done yet. These two old stallions are playing some of their best football of their careers with their offensive weaponry units extremely banged up.

Sunday's NFL Picks:

Oakland (+7.5)
at Pittsburgh***
I think that the Steelers will win the game, but not by the spread margin. Oakland can hand off to Darren McFadden enough to keep it close. Then they'll need Jason Campbell to make a play or two on the road against a very tough defense. Pittsburgh will get the win late coming off the loss last week.

Houston (+7)
at NY Jets***
The Jets have been playing some really close games lately. They might be due for a blowout win at home, but the win is all they will get. Houston won't allow them to cover, even though Matt Schaub is banged up.

Baltimore (-10) at Carolina*
They're going down to Carolina, and they're pissed off! Brian St. Pierre look the fuck out, brah.

Washington at Tennessee (-6)*
The Titans are a good team at home. This is a game they need to take care of business decisively if they want to be a playoff team.

Green Bay (-2.5) at Minnesota****
Alright, so Brett Favre's last breath of life is sucked out against the Packers. I want to say this is going the other way. But I just don't see it.

Buffalo at Cincinnati (-5.5)*
Buffalo got off the hook last week. They won't go winless. But the Cincinnati Bengals will put a lickin' on them. The Bengals, by the way; are like a Ferrari that needs a new transmission dropped in it.

Cleveland (+2.5) at Jacksonville***
What the Hell. The Browns should have won last week against the Jets. The Jaguars give up more yards through the air than anyone in the league. The weather will be warm. Have a career day, Colt McCoy!

Arizona at Kansas City (-7)**

Seattle at New Orleans (-10.5)*
The Saints had the bye week to prepare for this one. I think Seattle is horrible.

Atlanta at St. Louis (+3)****
St. Louis is damn good at home. They believe in their QB and their coach. It will be Atlanta's last loss for a while. But Sam Bradford will show flashes of why he's 'the next one'.

Tampa Bay (+3) at San Francisco***

Indianapolis at New England (-3.5)*****
Wherever you're at Sunday, whatever you're doing, sit down and watch this one.

New York Giants at Philadelphia Eagles (-2.5)*****
The Giants can't defend a scrambling QB worth a shit under Tom Coughlin. I remember back when they played Jeff Garcia when he was an Eagle. They would have never beaten him if they played 80 times. The Eagles are going to beat the Giants Sunday night. It's a crown jewel game, but this is my lock of the week.

Monday: Denver at San Diego (-9)**
The Chargers still haven't lost a game in November in how long?

New Orleans outscores Cleveland 36-15 in decisive 2nd Quarter.

The New Orleans Hornets shoot for their 10th win of the season and look to stay perfect at home when they host former head coach Byron Scott and the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight in the Big Easy.

The Hornets had their eight-game winning streak to start the season come to an end against the Dallas Mavericks on Monday in Big D, but got revenge with a 99-97 home win two days later. Chris Paul had 20 points and 11 assists, David West and Marco Belinelli each scored 17 points and Emeka Okafor notched a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds for New Orleans, which is 6-0 at home this season.

"That's a really good team that we just played," said Paul, who is averaging 21.0 points, 10.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds in the last two games. "Every good team is going to make their run, but we weathered the storm and pulled it out in the end."

New Orleans used a 27-7 run in the third quarter to take over the game and hasn't surrendered 100 points or more to any team this season. It also outscored the Mavericks by a 40-24 margin in the paint and converted 15 turnovers into 23 points.

Okafor is averaging 13.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in his last seven games.

After hosting the Cavaliers, New Orleans will embark on a four-game journey out west against the Kings, Clippers, Jazz and Trail Blazers.

Scott, meanwhile, was fired after a 3-6 start to last season and was in his sixth season with the club. Scott compiled a record of 203-216 during his tenure in New Orleans, which began with a team that won just 18 games in his first year of 2004-05.

The Cavs are 5-5 so far under Scott and will begin a three-game road trip Friday against the Hornets, Spurs and Pacers. They are 3-1 away from Quicken Loans Arena this season and closed out a three-game homestand with a 1-2 mark following Tuesday's 101-93 win versus Philadelphia.

Daniel Gibson scored 18 points and dished out eight assists, while Jamario Moon and Joey Graham each scored 13 points for the Cavaliers, who got 10 points apiece from Anthony Parker and Antawn Jamison.

"We just kept up the pressure. We kept the pressure up on defense and we continued to move the basketball," Moon said. "It wasn't just in that third quarter; it was in that fourth quarter too. We have been struggling for a while in the third and fourth quarter, but (tonight) for 48 minutes, we pretty much put a complete game together."

Cleveland snapped a four-game slide at home and took a sizeable lead after outscoring the Sixers, 26-16, in the third quarter. It also forced 15 turnovers and shot 46.3 percent from the field. Forward Anderson Varejao (ribs) returned to the Cavs' lineup and scored nine points.

Another reason for the Cavs' recent success is their bench play. The Cavaliers currently rank first in the NBA in bench scoring, averaging 44.1 ppg, and their reserves outscored the Sixers' bench by a 54-41 count.

Jamison currently has 6,996 rebounds and 899 three-pointers made in his career. With four more rebounds and one more three-pointer, Jamison will join Scottie Pippen and Dirk Nowitzki as the only players in NBA history with at least 7,000 rebounds, 900 three-pointers and 17,000 total points.

In injury news for Cleveland, guard Mo Williams (adductor/groin) is listed as questionable against the Hornets. He has missed back-to-back games.

The Cavs have won three in a row and 11 of 15 matchups in this series with New Orleans, but have dropped 13 of the past 17 trips to the bayou.

David West Leads Hornets With 34 Points In WIn Over Cleveland

- David West scored 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, and the New Orleans Hornets built a big lead early before holding on for a 108-101 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Chris Paul added 15 points, 10 assists and six steals for the Hornets, who improved to a league-best 10-1 despite nearly blowing a 19-point lead. The Cavaliers cut their deficit to as low as three in the fourth quarter before New Orleans hung on for the victory.

Marco Belinelli contributed 20 points and five assists for New Orleans.

Friday also marked the return of former Hornets head coach Byron Scott, who served as the head coach in New Orleans from 2004-10. He was fired last season after the club got off to a 3-6 start last season.

The Hornets held a 78-59 lead after a Trevor Ariza three-point play with 3:44 left in the third, but Cleveland closed the period on a 9-2 burst to make the game manageable heading to the fourth.

Daniel Gibson's basket on the Cavs' final possession of the third made it 81-68 heading to the fourth, though New Orleans pushed its lead back to 86-68 following a West three-point play and Willie Green jumper to start the fourth.

New Orleans held a double-digit lead as late as three-minutes remaining, as West's eight-footer provided a 100-89 margin, but Cleveland scored the next seven points.

Anthony Parker's three, Anderson Varejao's tip shot and Jamison's 16-foot jumper had the Cavaliers within 100-96 with a minute to play, but West gave the Hornets some breathing room with a layup off a Paul pass with 42.9 ticks remaining.

Cleveland got to within three, 104-101, after Jamison was fouled from long range and sank all three free throws with 21.2 seconds left, but Belinelli drilled two from the line on the other end, and Gibson's missed three-point attempt sealed the outcome.

The Cavs held a 28-26 lead after one quarter, but New Orleans ended the half on an 18-2 run. Cleveland went the last five minutes without a field goal, and the Hornets grabbed a 62-43 lead at halftime.

Cleveland began the second half on a 8-0 surge to get to within 11 before the Hornets stretched the advantage back to 19 on an Ariza three-point play.

Cleveland was the first team to score 100 or more points against New Orleans this season…The Hornets improved to 7-0 at home…Jamison now has 7,007 rebounds, 902 three-pointers and 17,215 points…The Cavs were able to stay in the game by going 32-of-34 from the free throw line…Varejao had a game-high 13 rebounds.

Clippers Eric Bledsoe among many amazing players in the NBA

As a television cameraman turned off the lights in the room of Eric Bledsoe, a fellow guard shouted advice to the Los Angeles Clippers rookie point. "You'll have to stop using the rugby shirts," power forward Blake Griffin said, mocking Bledsoe loose clothing in his thin, 6-1 frame. "You're a star now." That was after the second start of Bledsoe and the team's only victory in 12 games entering Thursday, the Oklahoma City Thunder on November 3. Bledsoe is still starting, a bright spot for the Clippers and one of several players who have a surprising impact on the teams. Due to injuries to starting guard Baron Davis and Randy Foye key reserve, Bledsoe had started December 9 games, averaging 9.9 points, 5.2 assists and 3.7 rebounds and shot 46.5%. "I'm changing now," says Bledsoe, laughing at his attire. "I'm using different neck shirts. … I had to go shopping." He played only six minutes and scored a point in the first two games. Then Davis was sidelined by a cyst behind his left knee. "I really did not expect (home). … I thought I would come alone and learn," says Bledsoe. "I was being aggressive before. I'm playing and not to think too much. I'm doing a lot of good decisions in the public hearing." Clippers guard Eric Gordon welcomes the change of pace that Bledsoe delivery. "We are more rudimentary.

We see it in the ball another quick point guard, is how we have to go after him, too," says Gordon. Davis, in his 12th season, has been a mentor. "One of the main types really talk," Bledsoe, 20, said. "He'll try to make me become the largest base was." Other players who have given more than expected: Sonny Weems: The third-year forward has started four games for the Toronto Raptors, but it is the second-leading scorer (14.7 points average compared to 7.5 last season). He's shooting 53.1% from the field and 42.9% from three-point line. Jason Smith: The third year, 7-foot forward-center for the Hornets in New Orleans was playing a personal record of 19.6 minutes per game entering play Thursday as the first entry in the bank. Smith, who recovered from a major knee injury that cost him the entire 2008-09 season with the Philadelphia 76ers, was averaging 7.2 points and 3.9 rebounds. Gary Forbes: The 6-7 forward for the Denver Nuggets, a rookie who spent last season playing in Israel, has beaten veteran of JR Smith in the rotation coach George Karl. A 51.9% shooter, Forbes was averaging 8.5 points and three rebounds in 16 minutes after coming on Thursday. He had 19 points and nine rebounds in Tuesday's win against New York Knicks. Landry Fields: 6.7 The guard-forward with the Knicks, a second-round pick, has started every game. Campos had three double-doubles, including 21 points and 17 rebounds in Tuesday's loss to the Nuggets. Austin Daye: The second-year forward for the Detroit Pistons has started every game, playing more of a lottery pick Greg Monroe. Daye averaged 9.7 points and 4.4 rebounds are almost twice his rookie production.

Three Crew Chiefs Say What Their Drivers Must Do to Win Sprint Cup

Denny Hamlin is said to be over his minor meltdown after the Phoenix race, and his crew chief, Mike Ford, is feeling good because they've had the best car and done the most winning down the stretch in the Chase for the Sprint Cup.

Kevin Harvick is bringing a new car to the season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend and as the third-place driver, will race flat out, crew chief Gil Martin said. But before Harvick goes for broke, the team is hanging out the "Gone Fishing" sign and headed to the Keys.

And Jimmie Johnson? Well, he's just a better driver than the other two, or so says crew chief Chad Knaus.

It may be that some of the things said Tuesday in a triple-header media conference featuring the three contending crew chiefs will - for motivational purposes - end up taped to one or another team's tool box in the garage at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Or it may be that it's just a lot of hot air that disappears into the air like so much exhaust smoke out of their engines.

Kasey Kahne Wins Pole for NASCAR Finale, Jimmie Johnson Leads Contenders

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Kasey Kahne won the pole position for Sunday's Ford 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, while four-time defending Cup champ Jimmie Johnson's sixth-place effort was best of the three drivers vying for the season championship.

Kahne's No. 83 Red Bull Toyota turned a lap of 176.904 mph around the 1.5-mile oval, bettering Carl Edwards' Ford and Jamie McMurray's Chevrolet. (Kahne is shown at right checking times during qualifying).

But as significant as who will be starting up front is who won't be. Championship points leader Denny Hamlin, who holds a tenuous 15-point edge over Johnson, will start 37th in the 43-car field. Kevin Harvick, who trails Hamlin by 46 points, will roll off 28th.

"It was tough ... but our car is gonna be fine tomorrow,'' Hamlin said. "We know that. This is a track you can pass (at). We're looking forward to that part of it. Friday has just never been our strong suit and so we gotta battle back again."

Harvick, who has started better then 20th only one time since August, didn't appear overly concerned with his starting position. He finished third at Martinsville, Va., last month after starting 36th and was runner-up at Las Vegas despite starting 34th.

"I thought we might have been a little better, but not much,'' said Harvick, who drives the No.. 29 Shell-Pennzoil Chevy. "Everybody on the car did a really good job. ... We've been talking about where we want to pit here, the same thing we do every week.

"Our car was very comfortable in race trim and we are ready to go.''

AMG Announces Free Academy for Customers, Partnership with Ducati

Since high-performance customers can never find enough opportunities to go fast—we can relate—Mercedes-Benz has announced that all buyers or lessees of AMG vehicles will be given a free day of go-fast training at the AMG Driving Academies at Road Atlanta, Laguna Seca, or Lime Rock Park. (We attended one such program at Lime Rock last year, and came away very impressed.)  The freebie can be redeemed up to one year after the owner takes possession of their AMG hotness, and applies to the Basic level program only. The announcement was made at the L.A. auto show, perhaps not-so-coincidentally adjacent to certain neighborhoods where a lot of AMG customers reside. Note to Mayor Villaraigosa: You might want to hire some more L.A.P.D officers for ticket-writing duties. Actually, forget we said that.

AMG, Meet Ducati. Ducati, Meet AMG

Mercedes also used the opportunity to announce a new partnership with Ducati, maker of some of the two-wheeled world's hottest bikes. Arranged in just the last few weeks, the deal is little more—at this point, anyway—than a smattering of marketing opportunities. For example, AMG vehicles will serve as shuttles at MotoGP races for Ducati riders and executives, who also will have access  to AMGs when visiting various locations around the globe. Ducati bikes will be made available for test rides at select AMG customer events, too, while the cars will show up at some of the bikemaker's gatherings. Also said to be part of the deal is the loaning of Ducatis to AMG execs, many of whom love the two-wheeled thrill machines. In addition, Ducatis will also be made available to qualified motorcycle riders attending AMG Driving Academy programs, for what could be the thrill ride of their lives around some of the country's best tracks. So if you're an motorcycle lover who happens to be a prospective AMG owner, we suggest you bring your leathers.

As for an AMG-flavored Ducati motorcycle or a Ducati-seasoned AMG Benz? There's nothing in the cards for that sort of partnership. Yet.

2011 Dodge Durango

2011 Dodge Durango - First Drive Review

Elegant and relevant: Dodge leaps back into the thick of the SUV game.

We'll cut to the chase: This new Dodge Durango is the brand's best vehicle not called Charger. After a two-year hiatus, the Durango is back, with a unibody design based on the same underpinnings that spawned Jeep's stellar 2011 Grand Cherokee, which came in tops in its first comparo. As handsome as the last one was brash, the 2011 Durango offers rear- or all-wheel drive, standard seven-butt seating (the Jeep is shorter and seats only five), a swank soft-touch and chrome-trimmed interior, and assembly quality that rivals anything in the segment. While the new Durango is heavy—weights are quoted at 4750–5100 pounds with the V-6 and 5200–5350 pounds with the Hemi V-8—Dodge is nonetheless positioning it as a performance-oriented alternative to the current segment offerings, a claim backed up by the retention of rear-wheel drive and the resurrection of the Durango R/T, which nabs a standard Hemi V-8, unique exhaust tuning, sportier styling, and a lowered, tuned suspension.

Carl Edwards Hangs On to Win Fuel Mileage Race in Phoenix

Carl Edwards ended a streak of futility stretching back 70 races and almost two years with a fuel-stretching victory Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway in the penultimate Sprint Cup race of the 2010 season.

Although Denny Hamlin dominated the race, Edwards, who started from the pole, came on at the end and took the lead with 47 laps to go. He then managed to conserve enough fuel to make it to the end when the race went green through the final laps.

"Boys, that's the way to end the streak right there," Edwards shouted on his radio after taking the checkered flag. "Wooooh! All right! We won!"

The victory capped off a winning weekend for Edwards, who also captured the Nationwide race at Phoenix on Saturday.

"Man, this is unreal," Edwards said in victory lane. "This Ford Fusion gets great fuel mileage, I can tell you that. I forgot what it was like to win a fuel mileage race except that feeling of the pit in your stomach during the last two laps.

NASCAR Boasts Closest Battle in Chase History With One To Go

Half predicting, half declaring next week's NASCAR season finale will be "one hell of a show," Jimmie Johnson emerged from his fifth-place finishing No. 48 Lowe's Chevrolet smiling and feeling good about his chances for an unprecedented fifth consecutive NASCAR Sprint Cup Series championship.

You'd have thought he won the race. He's not even leading the standings.

That designation belongs to the unhappiest of Sunday afternoon drivers, Denny Hamlin, who, after leading a race-best 190 laps, had to pit for fuel with 14 laps remaining at Phoenix International Raceway.

Hamlin heads to next week's final showdown at Homestead-Miami Speedway a scant 15 points ahead of Johnson in the closest championship fight since the Chase playoff format was installed in 2004. Third place Kevin Harvick is still very much in the thick of things, 46 points behind Hamlin.

The in-car television camera showed Hamlin yanking off his driving gloves and throwing them one by one against the dashboard of his 12th place No. 11 FedEx Toyota after the race's cool-down lap. Sitting on pit wall immediately after the race, he threw a water bottle and sullenly awaited his television interview.

"Yeah, it's pretty disappointing,'' Hamlin said, taking a long pause before answering questions. "We were in a good position there to look pretty good going into next week.

"It's tough to not be happy having a points lead going into the last race but. ... I was sitting pretty.''

Spotter's Stand: Twittering NASCAR's Championship Showdown

A day after the Phoenix race, where Denny Hamlin tossed a water bottle at his car in disgust, Jimmie Johnson beamed as the most confident "underdog" ever and Kevin Harvick vowed his team wasn't done, Twitter on Monday helped to instigate another rise in championship drama.

When three-time Cup champion Darrell Waltrip insisted that Johnson, who is 15 points behind Hamlin second place, is the favorite for Sunday's season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Harvick and Hamlin sounded off.

"Yea I guess (you're) right.. We shouldn't even show up if we are up against that!" Hamlin tweeted in response.

Harvick, never one to back down, personalized his shot.

The Sixers went over four minutes without scoring while Cleveland built its lead, and the Cavs held an 80-70 lead heading to the fourth.

Philadelphia was never able to get closer than seven points in the fourth quarter, as Cleveland had an answer for each potential rally. Holiday hit a pair of free throws with seven minutes left for a 90-83 contest, but Ryan Hollins answered with a pair from the stripe, and Graham's three-pointer gave Cleveland a 95-83 lead with six minuets to go.

The 76ers grabbed a 23-19 lead after the first quarter, but Cleveland fought back to tie the game, 54-54, at halftime.

The Cavs have beaten the Sixers five straight times and 10 of the last 11...Cleveland leads the season series, 2-0...Six players scored in double figures for Philadelphia...The Sixers committed 15 turnovers, while Cleveland gave up the ball only eight times...Philadelphia played without swingman Andre Igoudala, who missed the game with an Achilles' tendon injury.

Pacers Fall Short Against Hawks 102-92

Josh Smith finished with 25 points, eight rebounds and seven blocks, as the Atlanta Hawks earned a 102-92 win over the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Mike Bibby went for 16 points and seven assists, while Al Horford contributed 15 points for Atlanta, which has won seven straight over Indiana. The Hawks have won two in a row overall after a four-game slide. Marvin Williams, Joe Johnson and Jamal Crawford had 11 points apiece in the victory.

Danny Granger had a team-high 22 points for the Pacers, who were coming off a 99-85 win at Cleveland on Saturday, but have dropped four of their last six. Roy Hibbert had 18 points and 15 boards in defeat.

Indiana held a 24-21 lead after the opening quarter and Hibbert scored five straight points near the midway point of the second to put the Pacers up 38-32 with nearly 5 1/2 minutes left in the half.

Atlanta then scored nine unanswered a short time later and after Bibby hit a three-pointer, the Hawks held a 41-38 edge and were ahead 50-49 at the intermission.

Ahead by three with nearly 7 1/2 minutes to play in the third, Williams' three-point play and a pair of free throws book-ended an 8-1 run and the Hawks were ahead 66-56 with 5:24 left in the quarter. Atlanta was up 77-65 after three.

T.J. Ford's jumper cut the Pacers' deficit to five with 7:04 to play in the fourth, but Horford hit a jumper as Atlanta ran off seven straight to go up 90-78 and the Hawks held on the rest of the way.

Atlanta shot 50 percent from the field and made 8-of-15 from three-point range, while Indiana made 44.3 percent of its shots and only 4-of-18 from beyond the arc...Mike Dunleavy contributed 14 points for the Pacers.

NBA Scores: Pistons Rally Falls Short In Loss To Warriors

Monta Ellis scored 27 points and Stephen Curry added 21, as Golden State saw its 32-point lead dwindle as low as two in the fourth quarter before holding off Detroit, 101-97.

Dorell Wright donated 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while Reggie Williams added 14 points for the Warriors, who snapped a two-game skid and improved to 5-0 at home this season.

Charlie Villanueva led six Pistons in double figures with 18 points and eight rebounds, Tayshaun Prince added 15 points, Austin Daye 14 and Richard Hamilton 13 for the Pistons, who saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.

The Warriors scored 65 points in the first half then managed just 36 the rest of the way, shooting 21 percent in the fourth quarter, but holding on to stay perfect at ORACLE Arena.

Detroit drew as close as 17 points in the third quarter at 85-68 on a Gordon high-arching three, but finished the period in an 87-69 hole. A 9-2 stretch to begin the four quarter trimmed what was once a 32-point deficit to 11 at 89-78 thanks to a Villanueva layup.

Trailing 98-86, Detroit scored the next eight to cut the deficit to four points. Villanueva's three with 2:47 left trimmed the margin to six and Ben Gordon's layup on the next possession made it even closer. The Pistons had even more chances down the stretch, but rookie Greg Monroe missed a pair of free throws with 1:39 to play and Villanueva misfired on a trey from the top of the circle about 20 seconds later.

Finally, the Pistons capitalized. Tracy McGrady followed up his own miss in the lane by corralling the rebound and scoring off the glass while being fouled. He missed the free throw, but after a wild sequence and a jump ball, Detroit got the basketball back after Ellis missed a runner off the glass as the shot clock expired.

Gordon was stripped on the other end, and Ellis was fouled with 5.7 seconds to play. Ellis made the first, but missed the second, leaving the door open for the Pistons. The Warriors fouled Villanueva, who made the second of two attempts. Rodney Carney was nearly tackled with 2.7 ticks to play and he calmly sank both to put the game away.

"Well we're in the entertainment business, so we are going to make sure our fans get their moneys worth, but it puts the coaches, ownership and the general manager in the hospital," joked Warriors head coach Keith Smart. "When you are playing with a big lead it's hard to maintain composure to keep things solid."

The teams played close to the vest for most of the first quarter until Golden State rattled off 14 straight points to close the period. Ellis scored half of them, capped by two free throws with 34.7 ticks left, and Curry finished off the quarter with a jumper that went through the net with 1.4 seconds remaining.

The Warriors then rattled off the first eight points of the second period. Curry made two free throws for a 42-21 game as Detroit went over 6 1/2 game minutes without a point. McGrady's jumper for a 45-24 game was the Pistons' first field goal in just over 7 1/2 minutes as well. Carney's alley-oop slam opened a 54-29 margin, and the edge reached 32 points at 65-33 on Curry's three with just over two minutes left. Detroit rallied with nine straight to close the half at a more respectable margin, 65-42.

"Coming back from 32 is hard. It's tough, but it's part of the game," Gordon said.

Dan Gadzuric finished with just one point but also 11 rebounds for the Warriors...Golden State shot 42.4 percent from the floor...Rodney Stuckey had 11 points, eight rebounds and six assists, Gordon posted 14 points and McGrady added six and five rebounds in defeat...Andris Biedrins chipped in with nine points, eight rebounds and three assists for Golden State.

How did the Cleveland Browns do in their 26-20 loss to the New York Jets?

After big wins over the Saints and the Patriots, the Cleveland Browns fell victim to the New York Jets 26-20 in the final seconds of overtime. How did each positional unit perform during the game? It's time to grade the positions once again with a "Pass" or "Fail." The grades focus on the unit's performance for that particular week.

OFFENSE

  • QB (PASS):When was the last time a Browns quarterback led a touchdown-scoring drive with under two minutes to play? Colt McCoy had another solid game and wasn't fazed by the Jets' defense. He made the decisions necessary to move to 3-1 at quarterback, but now he's back to .500.

  • RB (PASS):While he didn't get as many carries as he did against New England thanks to the Jets controlling the clock in the second half, Peyton Hillis continued running hard en route to a stellar day. It doesn't matter what defense he faces -- he'll make his presence felt.

  • WR (FAIL):You have to feel bad for Chansi Stuckey, but his fumble in overtime stands out as a moment that really hurts. It seemed like the gameplan involved McCoy not even bothering to mess with the Jet corners, so that means the other wide receivers were mostly invisible.

  • TE (PASS):The tight ends were McCoy's go-to-guys. Ben Watson led the team in receptions and had plenty of yards after the catch. Evan Moore had a late catch while covered by Revis. Even Robert Royal caught a pass early on in the game.

  • OL (PASS):The pocket caved on McCoy a couple of times, but overall the protection was there and the run blocking was there for Hillis. The Jets seemed to blitz a little less once they saw they couldn't get past Cleveland's line.

DEFENSE

  • DL (FAIL):Shaun Rogers had a chance to bring Mark Sanchez down in overtime, but he didn't. There were other opportunities as well to bring Sanchez down, but the defensive line made him seem like Ben Roethlisberger out there.

  • LB (FAIL):Losing Scott Fujita in the second quarter hurt. The Browns had trouble covering the running backs out of the backfield, and when it came to stopping the run on third down, the Browns didn't have the "big play stop" they've been accustomed to from the linebacker position.

  • DB (FAIL):While they didn't play terrible, the lack of plays stands out -- T.J. Ward and Abram Elam both dropped interceptions that led to field goals. On Santonio Holmes' game-winning touchdown catch-and-run, Eric Wright and Ward both had cracks at making the tackle but didn't. The unit also lost Sheldon Brown early on.

SPECIAL TEAMS

  • ST (PASS): Phil Dawson and Reggie Hodges did their jobs, and Joe Haden filled in nicely on kickoff returns. Special teams didn't stand out, but they did have a negative play in a failed surprise onside kick. At least they didn't miss three field goals like Nick Folk did.

Ford Announces Launch Markets for Focus Electric

via Car and Driver Blog by Jake Holmes on 11/15/10

Ford has announced the launch markets for an electric version of the new 2012 Focus. Starting in late 2011, the car will be offered in Atlanta; Austin and Houston, Texas; Boston; Chicago; Denver; Detroit; Los Angeles; San Francisco; San Diego; New York City; Orlando; Phoenix and Tucson, Arizona; Portland; Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina; Richmond, Virginia; Seattle; and Washington, D.C. In other words, major cities in the U.S.

Among several factors, Ford chose the markets because they have high sales of hybrid vehicles; the Blue Oval expects hybrid buyers to be the earliest adopters of all-electric cars. Additionally, the company wanted to launch the Focus in markets with short commuting distances so customers can actually use the cars daily. Opportunities for collaboration with local governments and utilities were also taken into consideration.

After evaluating how well the cars fare in those markets, Ford will eventually roll out the Focus across the country. There's no solid timeline in place, though, with Ford saying it will increase production capacity and expand the Focus Electric's availability based on customer demand in various regions.

The electric car is based on the all-new, 2012 Focus that goes on sale here in early 2011. Ford has divulged precious few details about the EV version, but we do know it employs a 23-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, with a single-speed transaxle directing power to the front wheels. Ford claims the Focus EV will have similar acceleration and braking performance to the gasoline version, and a range of up to 100 miles on a full charge.

Hyundai Genesis 100K or Bust: Beware the Indiana Plain Wraps

Our extra-long-term Hyundai Genesis is in need of a little extra push to reach the 100,000-mile mark. To that end, everyone here is pitching in to finish the final 38K by December 31—about two months. Follow along as we take road trips of varying necessity in an attempt to roll over that sixth odometer digit.

Trip Mileage: 705 miles

Current Odometer: 67,948 miles

Destination: Indianapolis, Indiana

As regular readers know, we're driving hard to accumulate target mileage—100,000 miles—on our long-term Hyundai Genesis test car. In order to achieve this goal by the end of the year, we calculate that our crew will have to rack up 641 per day, every day. As daily commutes go, that's a bit on the high side, and we confess there are times when the Hyundai's speedometer reading has been known to creep a little north of posted speed limits.

Of course, I didn't confess that to the Indiana state trooper who pulled me over on I-465 outside of Indianapolis. You might get me to confess with a little water-boarding, but I've never seen the technique used at roadside.

"Do you know how fast you were going?" he asked, the pro forma question. I didn't answer that one at all, in part because I was marveling at what appeared to be the ultimate plain-wrapper cop car.

"Is that really a Shelby Mustang?" I asked in return. It was light blue with the white racing strips, the trademark snake logo on the grille, and other Shelby identifying bric-a-brac. "If so, that's not very sporting of you guys."

The trooper, who looked like cover material for the Boy Scouts magazine, did not seem to be amused. "No, it's just a GT with the Shelby stuff added on," he said. "Gets better mileage than a Crown Vic."

Duly impressed, I asked how fast he thought I was going.

"I have you for 71," he replied. "This is a 55 zone."

I thought about all the cars that had passed me in the last few miles—there were at least one or two—as well as the number of people I'd observed looking at their laps, with occasional glances at the road. There are several possible explanations for this—Christine O'Donnell, the Delaware senate candidate defeated in the recent election, probably has a theory. But texting seems the most likely.

Rather than mention this to the trooper, and appear disagreeable, I simply asked if he was going to write me for all of it.

"Of course," he replied, in a tone of voice usually reserved for slow children.

I observed aloud that it was common in minor speeding incidents to make it just 5 mph over.

"That would be a lie," he said, looking very Boy Scout.

What do you say to that? Nothing seemed to be the best bet. He handed over the ticket, with the usual explanatory remarks about who to pay and where, then said, "Drive safely."

"I have been," I said. The sarcasm was lost. These guys are giving Mustangs a bad name.

For the record, in Indiana the difference between 16 mph over the limit and 5 mph is just 10 bucks—$35.50 versus $25.50. That seems pretty reasonable, but the zinger is court costs, which are $114.50 for almost any garden-variety moving violation.

Oh yeah, the Genesis mission. Despite Trooper Scout, and an appointment at the Indy Speedway Museum, I logged 705 miles for the day, leaving only 32,052 to go. Nothing to it.
