Gateway International Raceway outside of St. Louis, the site of one of the most dramatic NASCAR finishes this season, has been closed by its parent company, Dover Motorsports, Inc.

The company said Wednesday it was "ceasing all operations" at the 1.25-mile Illinois track in Madison, Ill., only about five miles east of downtown St. Louis.

Dover Motorsports, which has been losing money in the economic downturn, had announced earlier this year that it would not seek to run any NASCAR Series events at Gateway in 2011.

The final event this year was a NASCAR Nationwide Series event on October 23. But the one they will remember is the Nationwide race on a hot Saturday night in July, when Carl Edwards wrecked Brad Keselowski coming off turn four toward the checkered flag, causing a huge crash. Moments earlier, Keselowski had bumped Edwards out of the lead.

"Gateway is a tremendous facility in a great racing community, but we are simply unable to operate it with an acceptable return," said Denis McGlynn, president and CEO of Dover Motorsports, in a statement.
